Use Animals to Fight Crime

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria ( VCN) has advocated the use of animals such as dogs and horses for crime control in Nigeria. This is contained in a communiqué issued in Sokoto on Friday at the end of the council’s 2015 professional continuing education seminar.

Its theme was, ‘’ The Role of Veterinary Practice in Enhancing National Security.” It was jointly signed by Dr Usman Musa and Dr Fatima Ballah, the Chairman and Secretary of the communiqué drafting committee. According to the communiqué, ” the issue of security is of paramount importance in this country. ” So, members are encouraged to take issues of food security, use of animals such as dogs and horses, etc, in crime control with all seriousness,” it said. The communiqué also said that there was the need for sustained collaboration between the veterinarian and para-veterinarian professionals. This, it noted, was to enhance animal health service delivery and ensure that it was given the topmost recognition as part of international best practice.

The communiqué also called for collaboration by various stakeholders: veterinarians, para-veterinarians, medical doctors and other health workers, to achieve the theme, `One World, One Health’. ” Continuing Education Seminar should be sustained and members are encouraged to attend so as to enhance their professional capacity,” the communiqué said.
