Citation of Dr Godwin Abonyi


Dr. Goddy Abonyi was born into the family of late Chief Michael Odoh Abonyi & Mrs Angelian Nwakaego Abonyi of Ada Obollo-Etiti, Udenu LGA of Enugu State on July 7th 1961. He had his early education at central school Ada Obolla-Etiti and Boy’s secondary school Ezzangbo in present day Ebonyi State finishing his primary and secondary school in 1975 and 1980 respectively.

Armed with Division One in the wasc exams in 1980, he passed the JAMB and gained admission into the nation’s first  autonomous university, University of Nigeria in 1981 for a 6-year course of education and training in  Veterinary Medicine graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1987

His job career took him through all sectors of Veterinary practice:

i.Meat inspection and hygiene as a Youth Corper at Bodija abattoir and livestock market, Ibadan, Oyo State 1987-1988. 

ii.Vertinary Officer II later promoted V.O.I at the old Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture 1988-1993.

iii.Technical Sales Representative later promoted Area Manager at the American Pharmaceutical giant-Pfizer products Plc/livestocks feeds Plc 1993-2001.

iv.Public Health consultant/Head of Special Projects atHardis & Dromedas Ltd, a Beauty and Hygience products manufacturing company Enugu 2002-2005.

v.Return to the University for a master degree in Public Health at the Department of Community Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria where he bagged the prestigious Master of Public Health (MPH) degree 2006. 

vi.Lecturer at the Department of Veterinary Public Health University of Nigeria 2007-2008.


i.In 2008, the then Governor of Enugu State Barr. Sullivan I. Chime, CON, appointed Dr Abonyi his Special Adviser on Community & Environmental Health and a member of Enugu State Executive Council. 

ii.Udenu stakeholders in 2009 approached the governor to release Dr Abonyi to run for his Local Government Council Chairmanship position which His Excellency obliged and Dr Abonyi was elected the Executive Chairman Udenu LGA in December, 2009.                          

iii.After a most eventful tenure of two years, Dr Abonyi was re-elected chairman the first and the only candidate to be so elected in Udenu LGA.

His achievements  in office speak volumes  hence earning him several awards and honor from Local and International Organizations and institutions including; Nigerian Senate, House of Representatives, Enugu State Police Command, NDLEA, United Nations POLAC, Facaulty of Veterinary Medicine UNN, Society for Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (SOSEH), NULGE, the Church, Rotary Club, including a traditional chieftaincy title of “Chinenye-Eze” by the Igwe in Council of his home community, Obollo-Etiti.

Dr. Abonyi’s dedication and service to the Veterinary profession started right from the University. He was elected the president of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS) and was part of the Team that resuscitated the National Students body (NAVMS) in ABU in 1986. He was also elected Deputy Senate Leader of the University of Nigeria SUG 1986. Dr Abonyi served for 4 years as the secretary of NVMA both Anambra and old Enugu State before being elected State Chairman for two terms. His contributions to the Veterinary profession as both an official of NVMA or using his contacts and resources while in Pfizer or holding public office speak volumes.

Even years after leaving public office, Dr Abonyi has continued to be honoured and called upon for one service or the other.

In August 2016 the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for justice, Enugu State appointed Dr. Abonyi a Justice of Peace (JP), an Honourary lay Magistrate reserved for Men of honor and impeccable character.

Dr. Abonyi has traveled far and wide attending conferences and seminars and also presenting papers as well as resource person in media programmes. He has visited United States of America, United Kingdom, Italy, Israel, Ghana, Benin Republic among others.

It is for these and other great potentials in Dr. Abonyi that the Veterinary Doctors in their historic ever joint congress of African Veterinary Association (AVA) and Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) held in Enugu 31st October to 4th November, 2016 elected Him the National President of NVMA for a term of two   years.
